The Hike In and Out of Havasupai Campground

Sunrise Late March 2024 leaving Hill Top to Supai

The hike to Havasupai Campground begins and ends at Hilltop at the end of Indian Road 18. It’s a long way from anywhere. We left our Airbnb about 5 AM for the two hour drive from Kingman Arizona. Leaving this early provided a great opportunity to see the sunrise over the desert, note that the temperature dipped into the high 20s, and arrive at Hilltop before the vast majority of hikers arrived.

It’s 10 miles from Hilltop to Havasupai Campground. All downhill on the way in and all uphill on the way out. For the most part the grade isn’t that steep. On the way in you have about a mile or so of steep switchbacks at the start and the last quarter mile or so down to the campground. Otherwise it’s just a gradual slope the whole way.

We were treated to amazing views of the canyon both ways since we left early. There were very long shadows spread across the canyon floor which gave way to intense sun as the hours ticked by. Overall just stunning views all the way, despite being quite tired after hiking so long with packs full of food, water, and camping gear.

Havasupai Campground itself is a long narrow stretch at the bottom of the canyon. It sits nicely between Mooney Falls downstream and Havasu Falls upstream. If you can arrive early you will have the best opportunity to find a site you prefer. We got lucky and found a nice spot right along the creek with a picknick table. Havasu Creen was wonderful to listen to at night. Not only that but the ground was flat and sandy, so about as comfortable as you can get. Our particular spot was far down near the last set of restrooms and close to Mooney Falls. That said, if you don’t get the campsite you prefer its easy to move the following day. Campers who are heading out leave quite early, some even around 4 AM. New campers don’t arrive till very late morning if not afternoon so there are plenty of vacant spots on your second day if you want to move.

Not sure what else to say. Since a picture speaks a thousand words here are some of the best photos from the hike in and out.
